Great Valley Computer Contest

It’s that time of year again and we ask for your continued support. The Greater Wilkes-Barre, Scranton, and Hazleton chambers of commerce in conjunction with the Great Valley Technology Alliance are sponsoring the 10th Annual Great Valley Computer Contest for high school students. Since 2000, over 600 students participated in this Information Technology contest.

Of course like any worthy cause, community assistance is necessary if it’s to be successful. We are looking for local businesses to sponsors prizes for the student competitors that will be awarded. There are opportunities to sponsor prizes for the first, second and third place teams. We will award prizes to both the student winning teams and the representative schools.

How is this sponsorship different than the other requests you receive each year? Not only can you reach out to the community but to the area’s future employment base. Sponsors will be recognized in the event program. In addition to celebrating outstanding area youth, the objective of the contest is to introduce and expose the area high school youth to Information Technology in a competitive environment.

For the 2010 competition, students must research, design, and develop a web site for a northeastern Pennsylvania business, community, or non-profit organization. The Web site may be informational or transactional in nature and published to the Internet.

Each year students have the opportunity to enroll in skill training programs, at no cost, provided by local training providers. Past participants received training in JAVA Script, Flash, Dreamweaver, Project Management, e-commerce, pod casting and movie making. For the 2009 competition, students will receive Project Management and Presentation Skills training. This truly indicates how willing and supportive our community is to developing our future work force.

Upon receiving your Sponsorship Sign-Up Form, an invoice will be sent with payment instructions. For your planning purposes, payments are due by February 20, 2010.
